Mine Kondo and Masu Usui, two oldest living residents in Japan, dies at 114

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is sadden to report the death news of Mrs. Mine Kondo (近藤ミネ) and Masu Usui (臼井ます), the two oldest living residents in Japan, sadly died on 20 and 21 May 2025 at the age of 114 years, 261 days and 114 years, 154 days respectively.
Mine Kondo (1 September 1910 – 20 May 2025)
Mine Kondo was born in Ikuma-cho, Toyota, Aichi, Japan on 1 September 1910. She married at the age of 20 with a farmer and had nine children (only six has survived, as three of her children passed away at a young age).
In September 2020, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
She became the oldest living person in Aichi Prefecture, following the death of Shizu Narita on 2 March 2023. She was a resident of Toyota, Aichi, Japan, at the time.
Her age was verified by Japan’s MHLW, as well as Yumi Yamamoto and Yu Li, and validated by the GRG on 26 March 2023.
Mine Kondo died at a hospital in Toyota, Aichi, Japan on 20 May 2025 at the age of 114 year, 261 days. She had 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She also was the oldest known person in Japan at the time.
Following her death, then 110-year-old Sumiko Taki (滝壽美子, born 1 December 1914) became the oldest living person in Aichi Prefecture.

Masu Usui (18 December 1910 – 21 May 2025)
Masu Usui was born in Oyama, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan on 18 December 1910.
In September 2016, she was recognized as the oldest living person in Oyama City.
In December 2020, she celebrated her 110th birthday, reaching supercentenarian status. By November 2021, she was acknowledged as the third-oldest known living person in Shizuoka Prefecture, following Kahoru Furuya and Hana Kato.
Upon the passing of 114-year-old Kahoru Furuya on 25 December 2022, she assumed the title of the oldest living person in Shizuoka Prefecture.
Her age was verified by Japan’s MHLW and Ayuta Tonomura, and validated by the GRG on 5 January 2024.
Masu Usui died of senility in Oyama, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan on 21 May 2025 at the age of 114 years, 154 days, and was also the last survivng Japanese born in 1910. She had been the oldest known person in Japan for only one day following the passing of Mine Kondo, who died the day before.

New oldest living person in Japan: Miyoko Hiroyasu (born 23 January 1911)

Following Kondo’s and Usui’s death, the new oldest living person in Japan is then 114-year-old Miyoko Hiroyasu (廣安美代子, born 23 January 1911). As of May 2025, Hiroyasu continues to enjoy lively conversations with those around her. Although she has been resting a bit more than usual lately, she remains mentally alert and is said to be doing very well overall.
She is believed to be the last surviving person in Oita Prefecture born in the Meiji era.
