Teresa Fernández Casado, the oldest known living person in Spain, celebrated her 113th birthday
The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is pleased to announce that Mrs. Teresa Fernández Casado, the oldest known living person in Spain, celebrated her 113th birthday on 29 July 2026 in Zambroncinos del Páramo, Castile and León.
Teresa Fernández Casado was born in Zambroncinos del Páramo, in the municipality of Zotes del Páramo of Castile and León, Spain, on 29 July 1913. She was the youngest of eight siblings. As a child, Teresa went to school just long enough to learn to read and write. She went to the fields long enough to help with the harvest or to take the newly lambed sheep from the farm to graze them in the fields.
In 1931, at the age of 18, Teresa married to Julián de Paz Casas, a young man from the village. The couple had nine children, six of whom are still alive [including Ángel (94), Amancio (93), Inma (82), Ausibio (80), Manoli (78), and Rosa (76)]. Working in the fields was only one part of the family’s daily life. To support their family, she made cheese from sheep’s milk, knitted wool socks, and sewed clothes for her children on her sewing machine.
In her youth, Teresa suffered an accident with a hoe while working in the fields thinning beets. A splinter flew out and caused her to lose most of the vision in one eye, although she has always viewed life with optimism and enthusiasm. Now she has almost lost the sight in her remaining eye, but she hears very well and her good humor (and sometimes a bit of anger) hasn’t left her.
On 29 July 2023, Teresa celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. As of her 112th birthday in 2025, she had eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
On 11 November 2025, following the death of 112-year-old Angelina Torres Vallbona (18 March 1913 – 11 November 2025) of Catalonia, Teresa became the oldest known living person in Spain. Later, on 6 July 2026, she surpassed the final age of Saturnino de la Fuente García, she became the oldest person ever to have lived in the region of Castile and León.
Teresa Fernández Casado currently lives in Zambroncinos del Páramo, Castile and León, Spain, at the age of 113. She is now primarily cared for by her two daughters, Manuela and Rosa. Throughout her life, she has survived the adversities of the Spanish Civil War, both World Wars, and two pandemics.
