The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is saddened to report the death of Mrs. Miyoko Hiroyasu (広安美代子), the oldest living person in Japan, sadly died in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, Japan on 29 July 2025 at the age of 114 years, 187 days.

Miyoko Hiroyasu was born in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, Japan on 23 January 1911 (Meiji 44). She was the class president at her elementary school. She attended an all-girls high school and later studied art at a school in Tokyo. During this time she lived with her uncle, aunt, and grandmother. She married a man she had met while working in Hiroshima, and later worked as an art teacher at a girls school in Hiroshima Prefecture.

In September 2019, Hiroyasu was reported to be the oldest (known) living person in Nakatsu, and was visited by the mayor, Masanori Okuzuka. In January 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Following the death of 110-year-old Kiyo Satō on 30 April 2021, Hiroyasu was reported to be the oldest known living person in Oita Prefecture.

Hiroyasu’s age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by the GRG on 28 April 2023.

At the age of 113 in 2024, Hiroyasu was still able to speak clearly, write, and draw, and she enjoys watching TV and playing card games with the other residents of her nursing home. She says she would “like to continue to live a healthy and enjoyable life”.

In January 2025, around the time of Hiroyasu’s 114th birthday, she contracted COVID-19 but successfully recovered, making her one of the oldest known survivors of the disease.

Following the death of 114-year-old Masu Usui on 21 May 2025, Hiroyasu became the oldest validated living person in Japan and Asia.

Miyoko Hiroyasu died in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, Japan on 29 July 2025 at the age of 114 years, 187 days. At the time of her death, she was the sixth-oldest living person in the world whose age has been validated by the GRG. Following her death, then Shigeko Kagawa (賀川滋子) of Nara Prefecture, who was also 114 at that time, became the oldest validated living person in Japan and Asia.
