Alice Langford, the oldest living person in Virginia, USA, dies at 111

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is sadden to reported that Mrs. Alice Rebecca Langford (née Bray), the oldest living person in Virginia, USA, sadly passed away in Richmond on 12 April 2026 at the final age of 111 years and 144 days.
Alice Langford was born as Alice Rebecca Bray in South Carolina, USA, on 19 November 1914, to parents James and Jodie Bray. She was one of five children born to Rev. and Mrs. Bray. She spent much of her childhood in Georgia.
On 9 December 1933, Alice married Heard Emmett Langford in Greenville, South Carolina. They went on to have three children together – a son and two daughters. By 1950, the family were living in Virginia. Heard sadly passed away in 1961, after which Alice did not remarry.
Alice was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Patterson Avenue Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Richmond. She taught Adult Sunday School for more than 50 years until she was 97.
Alice was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Wayne, Horace and James; and her sister, Frances. She was also predeceased by her husband, Heard; son, Jerry and wife, Margaret; and great-grandson, Trey Barden.
On 19 November 2024, Alice celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
Alice’s age was verified by GRG-UK Correspondent Oliver Trim, and validated by the GRG on 18 December 2024.
On 13 November 2025, following the death of 112-year-old Virginia Bell of Mecklenburg County, Alice became the oldest living person in Virginia.
Alma passed away in Richmond, Virginia, USA, on 12 April 2026, at the age of 111 years and 144 days. At that time, she was survived by her daughters, Anne Barden and Martha Proffitt, 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her funeral will be held on 17 April 2026.
Following Alma’s death, then 111-year-old Frances Byers (born 23 January 1915) of Louisa County became the oldest living person in the U.S. state of Virginia.
