Lucia Chacon Hechavarria, Cuba’s oldest living person, dies at 112
The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mrs. Lucia Chacon Hechavarria, the oldest living person in Cuba, sadly died in Mayari Arriba, Segundo Frente, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba on 22 July 2024 at the age of 112 years, 222 days.
Lucia Chacon Hechavarria was born on 13 December 1911 in El Grillo area, a demarcation located between Sabanilla and Los Lazos, the former Mayari Arriba region, now Segundo Frente. Her parents were Julio Chacon Macias and Concepcion Hechavarria.
She married Eduardo Diaz, and had 10 children (six daughters, and four sons).
On 7 March 2021, following the death of 111-year-old Pedro Batista Layana, she became the oldest known living person in Cuba. In December 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.
At the age of 112, she had 42 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Her age was verified by Idalberto Aguilar Macias, and was listed as pending validation by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) as of 10 June 2024.
She is also the second-oldest documented person ever in Cuba, behind Faustina Sarmiento Pupo (1905–2019) who lived 114 years, 213 days.
