Paladia Noja, Romania’s oldest living woman, celebrated her 109th birthday
The Gerontology Research Group is delighted to announce that Mrs. Paladia Noja, the oldest living woman in Romania, celebrated her 109th birthday on 20 July 2024 in Cugir, Alba County, Romania.
Paladia Noja was born in Cugir, Alba County, Romania on 20 July 1915. She married and had four children. Her husband died in 1989 at the age of 81. She learned tailoring as a young woman but was never formally employed. She made clothes for her four children and sewed for local sheep farmers, who offered milk, cheese, meat, and other foodstuffs in exchange. She had a large garden with trees, where she grew various vegetables and wheat, from which she made her own flour.
On 25 November 2023, following the death of 108-year-old Viorica Hogas, she became the oldest known living woman in Romania.
At the age of 109, she is still able to walk around the house, though her hearing and vision have weakened a bit. She is the second-oldest known living person in Romania, behind 111-year-old World War II veteran Ilie Ciocan.
