Johanna van Dommelen-Hamer was born in the town of Groesbeek in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands, on 20 October 1885. According to an article in a newspaper about her 100th birthday, it was mentioned that she always celebrated her birthday on the 20th of October, because according to Mrs. Van Dommelen-Hamer herself, she was born on 20 October at 0:05am, but her birth certificate from the municipality, wrongly, mentioned that she was born on 19 October at 23:00pm.

Following the death of Ann Flower on 9 August 1995, Johanna van Dommelen-Hamer became the oldest living person (Doyenne) in the Netherlands.

Johanna van Dommelen-Hamer passed away in Groesbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands, on 7 May 1996 at the age of 110 years and 200 days.

At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in the Netherlands.
