Lelia Van Dyke (1862-1973) age validation
Lelia Milly Vaughan (sometimes known as Milly) was born February 6 1862 in Powhatan County, Virginia, USA to Albert and Susannah Vaughan. From 1870 to 1880, she resided in nearby Amelia County. On March 14 1879, aged 17, Lelia married Washington Brown in Powhatan county and they had two children together – a son named Ollie and a daughter named Fanny. This marriage was short, as by 1883 Lelia had moved to New Jersey, marrying Martin Van Dyke on March 28 that year. They had at least two children together – daughters Josephine and Beatrice.
Between 1930 and 1940, Lelia was widowed. By 1950, she was living in the Bronx, New York City with family. Lelia died in the Jamaica district of New York on January 10 1973, aged 110 years, 399 days. She was buried back in New Jersey shortly after.
Validation
Lelia’s age was recorded with reasonable accuracy during her life, starting with the 1870 US census, right through to her Social Security Correspondence later in life and the Death Index. Her age was accepted as validated by the GRG from March 18 2025.
