Fuyo Kishimoto has officially become the oldest living Japanese person at 114
The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is pleased to announce that Mrs. Fuyo Kishimoto [Japanese: 岸本ふよ] of Kyoto Prefecture, has officially became the oldest living person in Japan at 114 years and 250 days of age, after the death of Shigeko Kagawa of Nara Prefecture on 27 August 2026.
Fuyo Kishimoto was born in Hamasaka, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, on 20 December 1911 (Meiji 44). At some point of her life, she moved to Kyoto Prefecture. She was a resident in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, but she moved to the special nursing home in Kita Ward in her later years.
On 20 December 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
In September 2023, she was reported as the third-oldest living person in Kyoto Prefecture.
On 26 April 2024, her age was officially validated by the GRG, verified by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Ayuta Tonomura, Dr. Wacław Jan Kroczek, and Robert Young.
In September 2024, she was reported as the oldest living person in Kyoto Prefecture, the eldest of six living supercentenarians in that prefecture.
On 27 August 2026, following the death of 115-year-old Shigeko Kagawa of Yamato-Koriyama City, Nara Prefecture, she became the oldest living resident and the only person left in Japan who was born during the Meiji era (ending on 30 July 1912).
On 10 September 2026, she was interviewed by media outlets including the Kyoto Shimbun. When a staff member at the special nursing home in Kita Ward where she resides asked her, “Are you happy to be the oldest person here?”, she looked the staff member straight in the eye and seemed to be trying to communicate something by moving her lips.
According to the members of her nursing home, she eats her breakfast and dinner in bed, but she is otherwise healthy and enjoys eating lunch in the living room with other residents.
