Erika Strohrigel, the oldest known living person in Austria, celebrated her 110th birthday

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is pleased to announce that Mrs. Erika Strohrigel, the oldest known living person in Austriacelebrated her 110th birthday in Hartberg, Styria, on 18 August 2026.

Erika Strohrigel was born in Preßguts, Styria, Austria, on 18 August 1916. Her life took her from Preßguts to Vienna, where she trained to be a teacher. In the early 1940s, Strohrigel returned to Styria and built a house in Hartberg with her second husband. She had a son.

She did not move into a retirement home until the age of 100. On her 108th birthday in 2024, her eyesight was reportedly quite poor, and she could no longer read. Even playing cards had become difficult. Despite this, she can still gossip and exchange news, also her curiosity and sense of humor had not faded. She remained mobile with the aid of a walking stick, and had been very active all her life.

In an interview with the Kleine Zeitung newspaper, she revealed her secret for a long life. Her secret to her longevity is to drinking little alcohol, getting plenty of sleep, going for walks as often as possible, and enjoying nature.

On 12 May 2026, following the death of 111-year-old Anna Wagner of Lower Austria, she became the oldest known living person in Austria.

On 18 August 2026, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian, together with her daughter-in-law Edeltraude and son Werner. On that day, her age was listed as pending validation by the GRG, verified by GRG-Germany Correspondents Stefan Jamin and Thomas Breining.

Erika Strohrigel currently lives in Hartberg, Styria, Austria, at the age of 110.
