Margarete Tröstl, Austria’s oldest person, dies at 113

The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mrs. Margarete Tröstl, the oldest living person in Austria, passed away in Schrems, Lower Austria, Austria, on 17 January 2025, at the age of 113 years, 326 days.
Margarete Tröstl was born in Gmund, Lower Austria, Austria, on 26 February 1911 as one of five children. Her parents were Franz Ecker (1885–1989) and Anna Meindl (1887–1959). As an adult, she found work at a company called ‘Bobbin’ before working as a travel assistant in the Persil plants for 35 years. She met her future husband in the ‘Schneider’ coffeehouse in Gmund. After the birth of their son Horst, the family moved to Vienna. In her family was also a history of longevity: her father lived to age 104.
After her retirement, she moved back to her native area. In 2014, she moved to a nursing home in Schrems.
On 14 March 2022, at the age of 111 years, 16 days, Tröstl surpassed the final age of Anna Medwenitsch (1907–2018) of 111 years, 15 days, becoming the oldest person ever to have lived in the state of Lower Austria.
On 11 November 2022, following the passing of 114-year-old Luise Pompe, Tröstl became the oldest living person in Austria.
Following her death, the new oldest living person in Austria is 110-year-old Anna Wagner (born 6 June 1914) of Euratsfeld, Lower Austria.
