Biography

Margarete Tröstl was born on 26 February 1911 in Gmünd, Austria-Hungary (now located in Lower Austria, Austria) graced the world as one of five children, setting the stage for a life rich in experiences and longevity.

Her childhood and youth were shaped by the First World War; in 2016 – on the 105th anniversary – she described this time as full of deprivation. But she grew up with her four siblings in security, with trust in God and honesty. She found work in the once well-known Bobbin furniture factory in Gmünder Neustadt, and her future husband, an officer and trained carpenter, in Café Schneider. Son Horst was born and the family moved to Vienna. Tröstl worked there as a travel assistant in the Persil works for 35 years and enjoyed traveling to other countries.

Her professional journey led her through various chapters, from ‘Bobbin’ to a distinguished role as a travel assistant in the Persil plants for an impressive 35 years. Love found her in the cozy ambiance of the ‘Schneider’ coffeehouse in Gmund, leading to a beautiful family with the birth of her son Horst. The family eventually moved to Vienna before Margarete Tröstl returned to her native roots upon retirement.

In the tapestry of her family, a history of longevity unfolded, with her father reaching the remarkable age of 104. Troestl herself found solace and purpose in her later years, residing in a nursing home in Schrems since 2014.

As she celebrated her 110th birthday in 2021, Troestl humorously shared her secret to a long and fulfilling life, saying, “The Lord loves me.”

With the passing of time, Margarete Tröstl became the oldest known living person in Austria, carrying the torch of longevity after the passing of Vienna’s Luise Pompe.

Margarete Tröstl has lived in the PBZ Schrems since 2014, where she is known for her humor. She revealed her tips for a long life on her 105th birthday: “Be happy, laugh, don’t smoke, drink little – and enjoy the roast pork.”

At the time of her 112th birthday, Margarete Tröstl was a resident of Schrems, Lower Austria, Austria.
