Morrie Markoff, United States’ oldest living man, dies at 110

The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mr. Morrie Markoff, the oldest living man in the United States and world’s oldest active blogger, sadly died in Los Angeles, California, USA on 3 June 2024 at the age of 110 years, 144 days.

Morris “Morrie” Markoff was born in New York City, New York, USA on 11 January 1914 as the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Max and Rose Markoff.

He married Betty Goldmintz in Los Angeles, California on 4 November 1938. The couple had two children: Judith Hansen and Steven Markoff.

During World War II, Markoff worked as a military machinist, and later grew an air conditioning and appliances business.

Markoff had his first gallery showing at the age of 100, even though he never trained to be an artist. He had his first book signing at the age of 103. His wife, Betty, died on 21 September 2019 at the age of 103, after almost 81 years of marriage.

He became the oldest active blogger in the world, following the death of 109-year-old Dagny Carlsson of Sweden on 24 March 2022. In January 2024, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.

He became the oldest living American-born man following the death of 110-year-old Horace Baumer on 30 December 2023. A month later, he became the oldest living man in the United States, following the death of 113-year-old Francis Zouein on 24 January 2024. Following the death of 114-year-old Pearl Berg on 1 February 2024, he became the oldest living person in Los Angeles.

He was also the oldest living World War II veteran in the USA and the second-oldest living World War II veteran in the world, after 111-year-old Romanian veteran Ilie Ciocan.

After his death, the new oldest living man in the United States is 110-year-old Vincent Dransfield (born 28 March 1914) of Little Falls, New Jersey.
