Maria Farrugia, Malta’s oldest person ever, validated at 112

Maria Farrugia at the age of 111

Gerontology Research Group is pleased to announce the age validation of Maria Farrugia, the oldest living person in Malta and the oldest person ever in Malta. Maria Farrugia was born as Maria Galea in Mosta, Northern Region, Crown Colony of Malta (now Malta) on 7 March 1912. Her mother Anna died at the age of 100.

In June 1941, she married Gorg Farrugia and had three children: Josephine, Angelo and Carmen. Josephine and Angelo died at the age of 5. Her husband died in 1962.

On 8 December 2021, at the age of 109 years, 276 days, she surpassed the final age of Connie Galea (1890–2000), becoming the oldest known person ever in Malta.

In March 2022, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming the first Maltese supercentenarian ever recorded. She later became the first Maltese to turn 111 and 112.

Her age was verified by Oliver Trim, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 27 March 2024.
