Karen Rigmor Moritz, Denmark’s oldest living person, dies at 110
Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mrs. Karen Rigmor Moritz, the oldest living person in Denmark, sadly died in Thulebakken, Aalborg, Nordjylland Region, Denmark on 4 April 2024 at the age of 110 years, 233 days.
Karen Rigmor Moritz was born in Norresundby, Aalborg, Nordjylland Region, Denmark on 15 August 1913. At some point, she married Sven Moritz, with whom she had three children. Her husband was a lawyer, public prosecutor and former police chief. Together they represented Aalborg at many official events.
At the age of 100, she decided to adopt a vegan lifestyle. However, the nursing home staff later determined that her diet required additional protein intake to sustain a healthy weight. As a result, she transitioned back to a diet that included meat.
Her granddaughter, Vibeke Hartkorn, is a Danish journalist and former studio host on TV Avisen.
On 22 January 2022, following the death of 109-year-old Else Rehling, she became the oldest living person in Denmark.
In August 2023, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
Her age was verified by Waclaw Jan Kroczek and Vibeke Hartkorn, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 28 September 2023. After her death, the new oldest living person in Denmark is 110-year-old Kirsten Schwalbe (born 10 March 1914) of Struer, Midtjylland Region, Denmark.
