Leny Mackenbach (1912-2023), Doyenne of the Netherlands
It is with a heavy heart that the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) announces the passing of a remarkable soul, Mrs. Helene Barbera Maria “Leny” Mackenbach, the Doyenne of the Netherlands, at the age of 110.
Born in Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands, on 29 December 1912, Leny Mackenbach’s journey unfolded across a century marked by resilience and grace. Following the passing of Ebeltje Boekema-Hut on 11 June 2022, Leny assumed the title of the oldest known living person in the Netherlands, a role she embraced with dignity and warmth.
On her 110th birthday on December 29, 2022, Leny Mackenbach became a supercentenarian, standing as the beacon of longevity not only in the Netherlands but also in the entire Benelux region.
As a resident of Rotterdam, Leny’s presence added a touch of elegance to the city she called home. Her life, spanning over a century, leaves behind a legacy of strength, wisdom, and the timeless beauty of a life well-lived.
In this moment of loss, we remember Leny Mackenbach with deep gratitude for the inspiration she brought to us all. May her soul rest in peace, and may her memory continue to shine bright.
