Biography

Emilia Borchert was born in Białystok, Russian Empire (now Białystok, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland) on 6 December 1910 N. S. (23 November 1910 O. S.) Following the outbreak of World War I in 1914, fearing the approaching German troops, she fled with her family from Białystok to Moscow, where she stayed until the end of the war. Due to the outbreak of the October Revolution in Russia, Emilia’s family returned to Białystok. In 1930, Emilia came to Warsaw, where she began attending a midwifery school at Stalowa Street in Praga, from which she graduated with very good results in 1934. In 1937, she married Edward Borchert, one year her senior, also from Białystok, who worked in Sosnowiec. The Borchert family survived World War II in Sosnowiec; their two children were born there – Marek in 1938 and Maria in 1944. In 1952, Mrs. Emilia and her family came to Warsaw, where she lived, respectively, in Muranów, Nowolipki, and in Gocław with her daughter and son-in-law. In Warsaw, Emilia Borchert worked as a midwife in the hospital Madaliński, and then as a gynecologist’s assistant in the clinic at the Kasprzak Street. Emilia Borchert remained professionally active until the age of 75. In 2010, Emilia Borchert solemnly celebrated her 100th birthday at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

Employment: since 1953, she worked in Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in Warsaw and later in Clinic of Wola Hospital – until she was 75 years old.

In 2017, she became the oldest living resident of Warsaw when Irena Śmiałowska moved from Warsaw to Legionowo. She became the oldest living person in Masovia Voivodeship following the death of 109-year old Jadwiga Stelmaszewska on 30 January 2020.

On 23 November 2018, she celebrated her 108th birthday. She was then visited by Wacław Jan Kroczek, GRG Correspondent for Poland.

Emilia Borchert died in Warsaw, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland on 6 December 2020, her 110th birthday. She was the 5th oldest living person in Poland behind Tekla Juniewicz, Eleonora Łosiewicz, Stanisław Kowalski, and Joanna Lipińska.
