Miho Matsuzaki, the oldest living person in Kumamoto Prefecture, dies at 112

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is sadden to reported that Mrs. Miho Matsuzaki (松崎三保), the oldest living person in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, sadly passed away in Kumamoto City on 8 December 2025 at the final age of 112 years and 234 days.

Miho Matsuzaki was born in Oita Prefecture, Japan, on 18 April 1913 (Taisho 2). She moved from Oita Prefecture to Oguni City after getting married. After her husband died at the age of 99, about 20 years ago, she moved to Kumamoto City to live with her family.

On 25 January 2023, following the death of 113-year-old Shinobu Hayashi (林シノブ) of Koshi Town, Matsuzaki became the oldest living person in Kumamoto Prefecture, at the age of 109.

On 18 April 2023, Matsuzaki turned 110, officially became a supercentenarian. And in September 2023, she was pictured with the prefecture’s mascot ─ Kumamon (くまモン), to hornored as the oldest living resident in the prefecture.

At the time of Matsuzaki’s 111th birthday in April 2024, she lived in a nursing home for the elderly in Higashi Ward. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied, “Nothing,”. She had no chronic illnesses, used a walker, and usually liked puzzles and quizzes. Before the new virus epidemic, she spent most of his time at home.

Matsuzaki’s age was verified by Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, Japan and Ayuta Tonomura, and validated by the GRG on 4 May 2024.

Miho Matsuzaki passed away in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on 8 December 2025, at the age of 112 years and 234 days. Following her death, then 111-year-old Setsu Sugawara (菅原節) of Otsu Town became the oldest living person in Kumamoto Prefecture.
