Groundbreaking study on World’s Oldest Person unveils secrets of healthy longevity
The Gerontology Research Group is pleased to report on the publication of a groundbreaking study in the prestigious scientific journal Cell Reports Medicine, featuring research on the world’s oldest living person. This work sheds new light on the phenomenon of supercentenarians, who, despite their extreme age, often maintain relatively good health.
An international team of scientists conducted a comprehensive, high-throughput multiomics study of the longevity record-holder, interrogating their genome, transcriptome, metabolome, proteome, microbiome, and epigenome. The goal was to understand what differentiates this individual from the general population and allows them to avoid typical age-associated diseases.
The findings point to a fascinating duality in the aging process. On one hand, the individual’s advanced age was manifested in typical biological markers, such as telomere attrition and specific changes in blood cell populations. However, on the other hand, the supercentenarian’s excellent health was associated with unique protective factors. These included rare genetic variants, exceptionally low levels of inflammation, a “rejuvenated” gut microbiome, and an epigenome that proved to be significantly “younger” than their chronological age.
These discoveries represent a major step forward in the biology of human aging. They suggest the existence of specific biomarkers for healthy aging and open the door to developing new strategies aimed at extending life in good health. As the authors emphasize, these findings will require further research in larger cohorts to translate them into potential anti-aging interventions for the general population.
