Mary Harris (1911-2025)

The GRG is saddened to report the passing of Mary Harris, the oldest known living person in Tennessee.
Mary Petrillose was born prematurely in Ithaca, New York on May 13 1911 to Italian immigrant parents. She was reportedly not expected to live, but went on to have 114 years of life.
In 1937 Mary married James Richard Harris and had 66 happy years together before she was widowed. They had lived in New York and Florida before moving to Tennessee, where Mary spent her remaining years.
At 114 years of age Mary could still walk with a walker and remained in reportedly good health.
She sadly passed away on August 22 2025, aged 114 years, 101 days, in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. She was survived by both of her daughters, both being in their 80’s. According to her obituary, her family cherished her wisdom, humor and patience – qualities often linked to longevity.
The Gerontology Research Group sends its condolences to the family, friends and all who knew Mary Harris. Solace can hopefully be found in the very long life of their loved one.
