113-year-old Holocaust survivor passes away

The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report the death of Rose Girone, formerly Mannheim, nee Raubvogel, on February 24 2025. She was 113 years, 42 days old.
Rose was born January 13 1912 in Janów, Austria-Hungary (now Ivano-Frankove, Yavoriv Raion, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine).
She first married Julius Mannheim in 1938, after which they moved to Germany. In 1939, Rose fled Germany for Shanghai, following Kristallnacht and the arrest of her husband. When the Japanese forced the Jewish people into Ghettos, she was determined to move again. In 1947 the family managed to flee again, this time to the US, where she lived for the rest of her life.
In 1968 Rose married Jack Girone. Having started a knitting business in the early 1940’s, Rose opened a shop in the US, which she went on to sell in 1980.
In 2012, Rose turned 100 years old, then in 2022 turned 110 years of age. She reportedly remained in good health for much of her life.
113 years of life was an incredible achievement, especially given the persecution faced in earlier life. The GRG sends heartfelt condolences to Rose’s family, friends and all who knew her.
