The GRG is pleased to announce the age validation of Mamie Watkins. Mamie was born to Morgan (sometimes spelled Morven) and Helen (nee Allen) Watkins on November 21 1883 in Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina, USA. She had at least four siblings.
Mamie married only once and divorced, reverting to using her maiden name. In 1924 she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she would spend the rest of her life, having been recommended the area by a friend.
Around 1991, Mamie moved into a care facility in Chicago, having lived independently up until that time. She was reportedly partial to chewing tobacco and bourbon, also refusing to verbalize her secret to a long life.
Mamie Watkins died in Chicago on January 21 1997, aged 113 years, 61 days.
The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is a global non-profit dedicated to validating, recording, and researching supercentenarians — those aged 110 or older. Founded in 1990, we focus on human longevity, healthy aging, and studying the lives of the world’s oldest people.
Our work requires significant funding for research, travel, and maintaining our website. Any financial support would greatly aid our mission to advance the understanding of human longevity.
If you wish to support our research financially, please donate to our efforts, but only if you can afford it. We would greatly appreciate even a symbolic support. Thank you!
