João Marinho Neto of Apuiarés, Ceará, Brazil, becomes the World’s Oldest Living Man at 112
The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is honored to inform that Mr. João Marinho Neto, a resident of Apuiarés, Ceará, Brazil became the oldest living man in the world following the death of 112-year-old John Tinniswood of the United Kingdom on 25 November 2024.
This is the first time the prestigious title of World’s Oldest Living Man belongs to a Brazilian man.
The case of Mr. João Marinho Neto was verified by Guinness World Records, with the support of Mr. Marinho Neto’s closest family, and validated by both, Guinness World Records (GWR) and the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 28 November 2024.
João Marinho Neto was born in Maranguape, Ceará, Brazil on 5 October 1912. During his childhood, his parents moved the family to a rural area of Apuiarés. At some point, he married Josefa Albano dos Santos (1920–1994), with whom he had four children: Antônio, José, Fátima, and Vanda. Later in his life, João had three more children with his second wife Antonia Rodrigues Moura: Vinícius, Jarbas, and Conceição. Through hard work, João built a financially stable life, accruing assets such as land and houses.
On 5 October 2022, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.
On 26 November 2022, following the passing of 111-year-old Virgilio Cardoso de Medeiros, he became the oldest living man in Brazil.
On 2 April 2024, following the passing of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez Mora of Venezuela, he became the oldest living man in South America.
On 25 November 2024, following the death of 112-year-old British John Tinniswood, he became the oldest living man in the world.
