Tomisaburō Wakui, Japan’s oldest living man, dies at 110
The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mr. Tomisaburō Wakui, the oldest living man in Japan, died a month ago, in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan on 5 July 2024 at the age of 110 years, 220 days.
Tomisaburō Wakui was born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan on 28 November 1913. In his youth, he worked as a tuna seller at Tsukiji Uogashi in Tokyo, and tuna remained his favorite food even in his old age.
In September 2017, he received a special visit from the mayor of Atsugi City and a letter of congratulations to celebrate his status as the oldest living man in Atsugi City.
In November 2023, he celebrated his 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
On 31 March 2024, following the death of 112-year-old Gisaburō Sonobe, he became the oldest living man in Japan.
His age was verified by MHLW Japan, Ayuta Tonomura and Waclaw Jan Kroczek, and validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 21 April 2024.
His death was reported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW).
