Rita Smyke, Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest living person, dies at 110

The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mrs. Rita Smyke, the oldest living person in Trinidad and Tobago, sadly died in Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago on 21 June 2024 at the age of 110 years, 175 days.

Rita Smyke was born in Princes Town, Trinidad and Tobago on 29 December 1913.

In December 2023, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

She became the oldest known living person in Trinidad and Tobago, following the he death of 111-year-old Una Webster on 23 January 2023.

In January 2024, she received a surprise visit from Social Development Minister, Donna Cox, who expressed deep admiration for her exceptional journey. At the age of 110, she had 5 children, 23 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

After her death, the new oldest known living person in Trinidad and Tobago may be Mrs. Dharmie Deo of Penal who claims to have been born on 27 April 1914, although her age is not validated by GRG.
