Biography

Sarah Patenaude was born in Russell, Ontario, Canada on 20 February 1907 to parents Joseph and Marie-Louise (née Gebault) Patenaude. She moved to Embrun, Ontario and began teaching in the village’s one-room school.

In 1929, Bruyere married Prosper Bruyere in Embrun, Ontario, and had seven children with him: Raymond, Roger, Marcel, Jean-Guy, Bernard, Eleonore and Marie. Raymond died on 24 April 2017, aged 80.

At some point in her life, Bruyere moved to Gatineau, Quebec. At her 105th birthday celebration in 2012, when asked what her secret to a long life was, she replied that she didn’t know, but both of her parents lived long lives. Her father lived to be 88, her mother to 81. Sarah also drank a glass of prune juice every two days.

Bruyere became the oldest known living person in Canada following the death of 114-year old Ellen Gibb on 5 June 2019. Bruyere died at the Monastere d’Aylmer retirement home in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada on 17 February 2020 at the age of 112 years, 362 days. The cause of death was pneumonia. After her death, Phyllis Ridgway became the oldest living person in Canada.
