Biography
Santos Hildebrando Rivas Garcia was born on 17 August 1911 in Chalatenango, Chalatenango Department, El Salvador to parents Catarino Rivas and Maria Inez Garcia. He was named after his older brother, Santos Rivas Garcia (born 1909), who died as a baby in 1910. According to relatives, his father was of recent Spanish ancestry. In addition to his brother, he had a younger sister named Genara (born 1913), who died at the age of 75. On 20 May 1933, he married Rosalina Alas Rivera in his hometown; the union would produce 13 children, although he had two other children from before his marriage. In 2022, two of his children died at the ages of 82 and 86. During his lifetime, he lived in four cities in El Salvador: Chalatenango (his birthplace), La Ceiba, Jujutla, and San Pablo Tacachico (where he resided at the time of his death). He also lived in Guatemala for around five years. From 1934 to 1956, he worked for the El Salvador national postal service, providing correspondence on foot from San Salvador, El Salvador to Nueva Ocotepeque, Honduras. He would later work as a carpenter and blacksmith, and was a farmer for over 80 years.
In August 2021, Rivas celebrated his 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. He died in San Pablo Tacachico, La Libertad, El Salvador on 17 April 2023 at the age of 111 years, 243 days. Following his death, Sabina Garay became the oldest known living person in El Salvador, and Rafael Chinchilla became the oldest known living man in El Salvador.
