Biography

Joaquim Varela was born on June 1 1915 in Ourique, Beja, Portugal. It is likely he was born on May 13 1915 – his parents were unable to travel the distance quickly enough to have him registered within the correct period, so to avoid a fine they told the registry he was born on June 1.

Joaquim married Augusta Parreira in 1940 and they went on to have six children together.

On September 21 2022 he is thought to have become the oldest living man in Portugal at the age of 107. A title he has since held.

In June 2025, Joaquim celebrated his 110th birthday, gaining supercentenarian status. He currently lives in Cercal do Alentejo, Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal, Portugal, where he is the oldest known living man in Europe.
