Biography

Domenica Ercolani, born in Urbino, Marche, Italy on 3 July 1910, entered into matrimony with Cristoforo, who served as a station manager. As a housewife, she not only cared for her children but also cultivated a fondness for gardening, tending to both a vegetable garden and flowers. Unfortunately, her husband passed away in 1986, and her son Sisto, a doctor, succumbed to a tumor in 1994.

In July 2020, Domenica Ercolani joyously celebrated her 110th birthday, marking her entry into the esteemed ranks of supercentenarians.

On 30 March 2021, Ercolani received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, a noteworthy event that placed her among the oldest known individuals to have been vaccinated. At that time, it was reported that she was residing with her daughter, Alessandra, who was born in 1936.

She became the oldest known living person in Italy, after the death of 112-year-old Angela Tiraboschi on 7 May 2022. Following the death of 112-year-old Delio Venturotti of Brazil on 1 June 2022, she became the oldest known living Italian-born person.

As of her 113th birthday, Domenica Ercolani resided in Pesaro, Marche, Italy. She was then under the loving care of her daughter, Alessandra, with the additional assistance of her grandchildren, Marco and Luca.

By celebrating her 113th birthday, Ercolani became the first supercentenarian in Italy to do so since 22 March 2019, Anna Benericetti’s 113th birthday. She was cared for by her daughter, Alessandra, with the help of her grandchildren, Marco and Luca.

Ercolani died from natural causes in Pesaro, Marche, Italy on 17 November 2023 at the age of 113 years, 137 days. Following her death, then 113-year-old Claudia Baccarini became the oldest living person in Italy.
