Biography

Ajka Lokmić was born as Ajka Bešlagić in Bosanski Šamac, Austria-Hungary (present-day Šamac, Bosnia and Herzegovina) on 4 May 1914 to parents Mustafa Bešlagić and Paša Bešlagić. At the age of three, she lost her parents, so she and her siblings were raised by her eldest brother Ibrahim in Sarajevo.

On 26 February 1940, at the age of 25, she married Nurija Lokmić (1915–1984). The couple had four children: Nurudin (1943), Zineta (1945), Šemsudin (1948) and Zumreta (1953). Her husband owned a bakery, while she was a housewife. She has always been a devout Muslim, praying (Fard) and fasting throughout her entire life. From the age of seven until she reached 100, she fasted every Ramadan.

On 12 March 2021, following the death of 108-year-old Muška Porobić, she became the oldest known living person in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On 4 May 2024, she celebrated her 110th birthday becoming a supercentenarian, as well as the first female supercentenarian ever recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On 20 May 2024, at the age of 110 years, 16 days, she surpassed the final age of Jovan Jovanović (1906–2016), becoming the oldest person ever in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ajka Lokmić died in Stari Grad, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on 17 August 2024 at the age of 110 years, 105 days.
