Haruko Tanaka, the oldest living person in Tottori Prefecture, dies at 111

Tanaka on her 110th birthday in 2024

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is sadden to report the death of Mrs. Haruko Tanaka (田中春子), the oldest living person in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, who lived in Hiketa, Kawahara (河原町曳田), Tottori City, passed away on 15 January 2026 at the age of 111 years and 314 days.

Haruko Tanaka was born in Kawahara (now part of Tottori City), Tottori Prefecture, Japan, on 7 March 1914 (Taisho 3), as the youngest of three siblings. At the age of 21, she married and raised four children.

Tanaka had contracted COVID-19 before her 110th birthday in March 2024 but recovered, and her birthday party was held on May 2nd, about two months later. At the age of 110, it was reported that her favorite foods were canned mandarin oranges, watermelon, and chocolate, and her hobby was writing haiku.

On 3 March 2024, four days before Tanaka’s 110th birthday, following the death of 110-year-old Tomiko Osaki (尾崎とみ子), she became the oldest living person in Tottori Prefecture.

Tanaka’s age was verified by Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, Japan, and validated by the GRG on 25 July 2024.

Haruko Tanaka passed away in Hiketa, Kawahara, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, Japan, on 15 January 2026, at the age of 111 years and 314 days.
