Oiku Hashimoto, the oldest living person in Gunma Prefecture, dies at 111

The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) is sadden to report the death of Mrs. Oiku Hashimoto (橋本オイク), the oldest living person in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, who lived in Ōra Town (邑楽町), passed away on 11 January 2026 due to old age. She was 111 years and 200 days at that time.

Oiku Hashimoto was born in Shinozuka (篠塚), Ōra Town, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, on 25 June 1914 (Taisho 3). She had five children. According to her second son, Akira (晃, then 86), she was devoted to farming and enjoyed playing gateball and ground golf until she was 104. “She was strong-willed and patient, just like a mother born in the Taisho era,” he said.

On 25 June 2024, Hashimoto turned 110, officially became a supercentenarian. On 5 March 2025, following the death of 110-year-old Kiyomi Katō (加藤きよみ), she became the oldest living person in Gunma Prefecture.

Hashimoto’s age was verified by Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, Japan and Brian Hsu, and validated by the GRG on 10 October 2025.

Until Hashimoto was diagnosed with shingles in December 2025, she had been healthy and had been spending his time at home with his family. Akira said, “She will finally be reunited with her father and friends in heaven. She has worked hard for a long time, so I hope she can rest in peace.”

Oiku Hashimoto passed away due to old age in Ōra Town, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, on 11 January 2026, at the age of 111 years and 200 days. The funeral will be held as a family funeral at a funeral home in town on 15 January 2026.
