The Gerontology Research Group is pleased to announce news that Mrs. Maria da Conceição de Brito, the oldest living person in Portugal, celebrated her 112th birthday in São Brás de Alportel, Faro District, Portugal on 31 December 2024.

Maria da Conceição de Brito was born in São Romão, Faro District, Portugal, on 31 December 1912. At some point in her life, she got married and the couple had at least one son named Rogerio.

She worked in agriculture, mowing the lawn, picking olives, broad beans and carobs. She also took care of the housework.

She lived independently in her own home until the age of 99, when she went to the nursing home Santa Casa da Misericórdia de São Brás de Alportel.

On 31 December 2022, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian. She is the first supercentenarian from Faro District and Algarve, as well as the first known supercentenarian from the south of Portugal. On her 110th birthday she still remains lucid, but as she has a strong personality, she told the reporters that she didn’t enjoy her birthday party.

On 20 August 2023, following the death of 112-year-old Inacia Carmelino, she became the oldest living person in Portugal.
