Thorhildur Magnusdottir, Iceland’s oldest living person, celebrated her 107th birthday

The Gerontology Research Group is pleased to announce news that Mrs. Thorhildur Magnusdottir [Þórhildur Magnúsdóttir], the oldest living person in Iceland, celebrated her 107th birthday in Reykjavík on 22 December 2024.
Þórhildur Magnúsdóttir was born on the farm Miðhús in Biskupstungur, municipality of Bláskógabyggð, Danish Iceland (now Iceland) on 22 December 1917. She moved to Reykjavík as a child in 1923.
At some point, she married Gústaf Adolf Lárusson, and together they had six daughters. Her husband died in 2013. She lived at the same address in Reykjavík from 1947 until relocating to a nursing home in the spring of 2020.
On 18 July 2022, following the death of 104-year-old Ásta Sigmundsdóttir, she became the oldest living person in Iceland.
She is the last surviving Icelander who was born before Iceland became a sovereign state on 1 December 1918.
