Ana Luisa García, Puerto Rico’s oldest living person, dies at 111

The Gerontology Research Group is saddened to report news that Mrs. Ana Luisa García de Villarini, the oldest living person in Puerto Rico, sadly passed away in San Juan, Puerto Rico on 8 December 2024 at the age of 111 years, 108 days.
Ana Luisa Garcia was born in Cidra, Puerto Rico on 22 August 1913. She was the eighth of twelve siblings born to parents Ramón García and María Vázquez. In 1933, at the age of 20, she began working as a schoolteacher in Patillas, making her commute to school every day either by foot or horseback. She retired as a teacher in 1965.
On 17 July 2023, following the death of 111-year-old Rosa Castrodad Meléndez, she became the oldest known living woman in Puerto Rico.
On 22 August 2023, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.
On 5 November 2023, following the death of 110-year-old Bienvenido Díaz Guilfú, she became the oldest known living person in Puerto Rico.
Following her death, the new oldest living person in Puerto Rico is 110-year-old Ana Helvetia Barros Schira (born 9 April 1914) of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
