Biography
Sarah DeRemer Clark (sometimes known as “Sadie”) was born in Hollywood, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA, on September 24 1880 to parents Walter and Amelia A (nee Kreyscher) Clark. Hollywood in Pennsylvania no longer exists.
On August 28 1901 she married Abraham Lincoln Knauss in South Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, going on to have one child together – a daughter who lived to 101 herself. Abraham passed away on March 1 1965, leaving Sarah a widow for her remaining years.
In September 1990 she became a supercentenarian, celebrating her 110th birthday with family and friends. This was to be the first of ten such occasions.
Sarah passed away in a care facility in Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, on December 30 1999 at the age of 119 years, 97 days.
Sarah had been the oldest known and age-validated person in the world from the death of Marie-Louise Meilleur of Canada on April 16 1998 until her own passing. She was also the last person alive born in 1880 and the last surviving person in the world born before 1884.
