Biography
Nancy Elizabeth Mitchell was born in Lebanon, St Clair County, Illinois, USA, on December 19 1841 to parents Solomon and Diana (nee Warrington) Mitchell. Her mother passed away while she was young and her father remarried in 1850.
On October 4 1864 she married Sylvester William Merriman in Waterloo, Monroe County, Illinois, going on to have at least four children together. One of her children lived to 100 and another to almost 100. Sylvester passed away on March 7 1916, after which Nancy never remarried.
In December 1951 she celebrated her 110th birthday, gaining status as a supercentenarian.
Nancy passed away in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, on January 14 1954 at the age of 112 years, 26 days. Before her passing she was the oldest known and age-validated living person in the world.
