Biography
Golda Gurfel (anglicized to “Goldie Garfunkel”) was born in Kishinev (Chișinău), Molvdova (then part of the Russian Empire), on October 30 1900 to parents Chazkel and Devorah Gurfel.
Around 1923 she and two of her sister moved to the US, settling in New York. In January 1933 Goldie married Philip Steinberg in Brooklyn, New York City, going on to have at least two children together. Philip passed away on February 4 1967, after which Goldie never remarried.
In October 2010 she became a supercentenarian, reaching her 110th birthday. This was to be the first of five such occasions.
Goldie passed away in a care facility in Long Beach, Nassau County, New York, on August 16 2015, aged 114 years, 290 days.
