Biography
Elizabeth Gauthier was born in Grafton, Massachusetts, USA on 5 June 1901. Her parents were Canadian immigrants Marcel Voutour and Olive (née LeBlanc) Voutour. She had six siblings.
She was educated in Grafton Schools. She voted for the first time in 1928. She moved to Northbridge in 1959.
She worked as a cloth inspector at Wuskanut Mills, South Grafton for many years. She then worked as a hat decorator at the Kartiganer Hat Shop, West Upton, for several years.
She married Ulric Gauthier aorund 1928. The couple had one son: Edgar Gauthier (1932–2013). She got widowed in 1973.
She lived with her son Edgar with whom she travels regularly, her trips include going to China at age 99, where she climbed the steps to the Great Wall; Europe at age 102, where she was crowned “queen of the cruise”; and Mexico where she’s wintered for the past 16 years. She not had grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, Northbridge, and of it former Sodality of the Ladies of Saint Anne. A supporter of the Diocese of Worcester Haitian Apostolate Adopt-A-Student Program, she has sponsored the Catholic education of a young Haitian girl in Les Cayes, Haiti. In 2010, she was honored by the Haitian Apostolate with its Humanitarian award.
Elizabeth Gauthier died at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough, Massachusetts, USA on 10 February 2012 at the age of 110 years, 250 days. She is survived by one son Edgar Gauthier, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
