Biography

Arthur Henry Bates was born on November 25 1881 (claimed October 25 1881) in Kirkdale, Liverpool, England, to parents John and Jane Bates.

The family moved to New Zealand in 1892. He never married, even giving this as his reason for a long life when asked in later years.

On May 17 1989 Arthur became the oldest living person in New Zealand, a title he held until his death.

In November 1991 he turned 110, gaining supercentenarian status.

Arthur passed away on January 19 1992, aged 110 years, 55 days, in Napier, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
