Biography
Alice Flannagan was born in Charlottesville, Virginia as the daughter of Maria Flannagan and an unnamed man. In the 1870s her mother remarried to a man with the last name Gilmore and took the family to Albemarle, Virginia.
Alice married Ledwell Coles and had six children with him, five of whom she survived. She was widowed around 1910 and moved to Syracuse, New York in 1940 to live with her daughter Hester (who lived to be 106 herself). Coles died in Syracuse, New York on 5 November 1978, aged 113 years, 69 days. She was succeeded as the world’s oldest person by Eliza Underwood.
