Biography
Ruth Engstrom was born on 23 September 1902 in Nybro, Kalmar County, Sweden. Before marrying Folke Engstrom in the early 1920s, she owned a store that sold hats and accessories. Following their marriage, the couple relocated to India, where Folke secured a job in a match factory. They lived in Calcutta and Bombay for over 30 years before returning to Sweden in the early 1950s. Folke passed away from lung cancer in 1966.
In 2020, Ruth’s son, Stig Engström (1934-2000), was a suspect in the 1986 assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, but later the evidence against him would have been too weak for a trial.
After the death of Ester Johansson on 16 October 2011, Ruth Engstrom became the oldest known living person in Sweden, though not the oldest known living Swedish-born individual, as Esther Ecklund in the United States was older.
Ruth Engstrom passed away on 2 December 2013, at the age of 111 years and 70 days.
