Biography
Milia Paidiou was born in Lefkonoiko, British Empire (present-day Cyprus) on 31 October 1912. Her mother Maria died at the age of 99. She married Loucas Paidiou in 1940 and together with him had four sons: Savvas, Antonis, Gabriel (Lakis) and Christakis. She helped in the Cypriot War of Independence (1955–1959), as her son Savvas Paidios was actively participating and was bringing military equipment in their home, which Milia took charge to hide. After Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Milia was forced to leave Lefkonoiko with her family in 1974.
On 24 March 2021, she surpassed the age of Eleni Tanousi, becoming the oldest known person ever from Cyprus. On 26 April 2021, she surpassed the age of Michael Klanga, becoming the oldest known person ever born in Cyprus.
In December 2021, the Municipality of Lefkonoiko honored her with the emblem of the Municipality with the National Poet of Cyprus, Vassilis Michailidis, and wrote her wishes on a card. She was also offered an honorary plaque.
In October 2022, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became the first (known) supercentenarian from Cyprus.
Milia Paidiou died on 3 August 2023 in Episkopi, Cyprus at the age of 110 years, 276 days. At the time of her death she lived with her son Savvas. She had 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
