Mattie Ruth Stethem was born in Long Bottom, Ohio, USA on June 14, 1903. Her parents were Fred E. Young and Inzie (née Safried) Young. One of her earliest Meigs Country childhood memories included the flood of 1913, watching the rising waters of the Ohio River lift their aged log home off its foundation, depositing it a half-mile away. She married Emmett Stethem on July 21, 1921. The couple had two children: Roland Richard, and Gerald George, and one adoptive son from neighborhood. They survived another flood in 1937. She was widowed in 1978. Mrs. Stethem lived on her own until age 100 when she suffered from a broken hip. At age 106, she was still able to move around with a walker, and, despite some hearing loss, enjoyed watching episodes of the Western television series, “Bonanza,” as well as faith-based programming on Sundays.
