Mary Harris was born in Ithaca, New York, USA on 13 May 1911 to Italian immigrants, Joseph and Concetta (Delmonte) Petrillose. She married James Richard Harris from North Lexington, North Carolina in August 1937. During their 66 years of marriage, they ran a dry cleaning business and dairy farm in New York. They later retired to Florida, where they spent the last several decades before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Harris and her husband later moved in to the Alexian Village of Tennessee in 2000, where she resides today. Her husband died in September 2003, aged 90. On her 110th birthday in 2021, Harris has two daughters, five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren (possibly more).
Following the death of Pearlie Williams, Mary Harris became the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Tennessee.
