Biography

Manuela Fernandez-Fojaco was born in Llamas, in the municipality of Aller, Asturias, Spain on 18 June 1895.

She became the oldest known living person in Spain, following the death of 111-year-old Lucia Madaria-Vesga on 2 February 2006.

She became the oldest known living person in Europe, following the death of 115-year-old Portuguese Maria de Jesus on 2 January 2009.

Fernandez-Fojaco died four days later in Grado, Asturias, Spain on 6 January 2009 at the age of 113 years, 202 days. After her death, then-112-year-old Italian Lucia Lauria became the Europe’s oldest living person (although Eugenie Blanchard was from Saint Barthelemy, which is part of the European Union) and then-110-year-old Teresa Dosaigues became the Spain’s oldest living person.
