Biography

Laura Svehaug was born as Laura Hansine Jørgensdatter in Svedhaug, Selje Municipality, as the daughter of Jorgen Torbjornsen and Ingeborg Jakobsdatter. She was christened on 12 December 1886. She had 4 other siblings: Oline, Jorgine, Ingebrigt and Ola. She worked as a servant in Bergen for most of her adult life.

She never married. The name change is due to the fact that when people stopped using patronymic names like Jorgensdatter (the daughter of Jorgen), people chose to use names of places in the area. Laura was born in Svedhaug, which could be where Svehaug originates from.

Laura Svehaug became the oldest living person (Doyenne) in Norway following the death of Ella Kristine Hagen on October 29, 1994.

Svehaug died in Bergen on 6 March 1998, aged 111 years, 107 days. She was the third-oldest person from Norway, but is now fourth due to being surpassed by Elisabet Ekenaes.
