Biography

Kikuyo Honma, born on November 1, 1910, in Nunobe Village, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, was the third of six siblings. Her life was marked by resilience and hard work. She married a charcoal burner and supported her husband in daily ascents up the mountain to assist in his charcoal production while also tending to the family’s crops in the fields. Tragically, her husband lost his life during World War II in 1945, and from the age of 34, Kikuyo Honma found herself as the sole provider responsible for raising their four young children.

In her later years, Honma’s strength and determination made her an inspirational figure. She persevered through life’s challenges and continued to care for her family. Her unwavering commitment to her children’s well-being was truly remarkable.

Following the passing of Chitetsu Watanabe, who lived to be 112 years old and passed away on February 23, 2020, Kikuyo Honma became the oldest known living person in Niigata Prefecture. This recognition was a testament to her enduring spirit and longevity.

In November 2020, Kikuyo Honma celebrated her 110th birthday, achieving supercentenarian status. Her life story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the strength that can be found within the human spirit.

Kikuyo Honma died from natural causes in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan on September 12, 2023 at the age of 112 years, 315 days.
