Józefa Stanisława Szyda was born on March 11, 1903 in Turek, Russian Empire (now Turek, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland). She married, however, the couple never had children. Later, she moved to Łódź where, together with her husband, they run a shop. Reportedly, Mrs. Szyda was completely independent in daily activities until aged 108. She was cared by her niece. The family used to adress her as “Auntie Stachna”. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied that the most important thing is to keep regular sleeping hours. On her 108th birthday, she was reported to be the oldest living person in the city of Łódź.
Józefa Stanisława Szyda died on May 1, 2013 in Łódż, Łódź Voivodeship, Poland, at the age of 110 years, 51 days. Mrs. Szyda is the 2nd oldest person in the history of Łódź Voivodeship, being five days younger than the record-holder of the region, Józefa Karczewska (1902–2013), also a validated supercentenarian. At the time of her death, Józefa Stanisława Szyda was the Doyenne of Poland, having inherited the title from aforementioned Józefa Karczewska, on Jan. 18, 2013.
