Johanne Pedersen Holm was born in the Danish city of Aarhus, on 24 January 1892. She worked as a teacher back in Denmark. Johanne was 47 years old when she moved to Sweden. The reason was that she met a Swedish carpenter named Axel Svensson in 1938 and married him the next year. An active and fit person, she enjoyed cycling, and in 1942 she rode across the the Sound, the strait that connects the Swedish-Danish border.

They never had any children together. Johanne learned to swim when she was 87 years old. She credited her longevity to good genes, eating lots of fruit and never smoking. Aside from being partially deaf, she was described as being very lucid and healthy at the time of her 111th birthday, and said she enjoyed spending her time reading, knitting and watching TV, where she particularly enjoyed nature programs.

She travelled frequently and had been in countries such as Egypt, Israel, the Soviet Union and Holland. She became a widow in 1963. Svensson died in Landskrona, Scania, Sweden, on 29 May 2003, at the age of 111 years, 125 days. She is the third-oldest Danish-born woman ever, behind Ellen Brandenborg and Karla Lindholm Jensen.
